Catalani, A.: Ero e Leandro / Contemplazione / Il Mattino (Rome Symphony, La Vecchia)
Naxos / 19th/20th Century Italian Classics: 8.573072

Best known for his opera La Wally, Alfredo Catalani was one of the leading Italian opera composers of the late 19th century. Catalani also wrote a small number of orchestral works, five of which are included here, including two world premiere recordings. Dramatic in scope and with unique melodies, these fine, Romantic compositions deserve a wider audience. Francesco La Vecchia leads the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma in another sterling performance for Naxos.

(Overtures from the British Isles) (BBC National Orchestra, Gamba)
Chandos: CHAN10797

Many of these overtures were popular favorites in their day, now fallen into unjust neglect. For fans of rare English repertoire, there is much to enjoy here, including Frederic Cowen's "The Butterfly's Ball", Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's "Scenes from The Song of Hiawatha," and Henry Balfour Gardiner's "Overture to a Comedy." Sumptuous recording and spirited performances by Rumon Gamba and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales complete the package.

Delos: DE3462

Delos presents another vocalist whose star is on the rise - Azerbaijani soprano Dinara Alieva. This appealing program of best-loved Verdi, Puccini, Catalani, Cilea, and Leoncavallo arias, with lush and idiomatically true support from the Czech National Symphony Orchestra led by Maestro Marcello Rota provides the perfect showcase for this important new voice.

Lute Recital: Lindberg, Jakob - Dowland, J. / Robinson, T. / Johnson, R. / Bacheler, D. / Hely, C. (Jacobean Lute Music) Lute Recital: Lindberg, Jakob - Dowland, J. / Robinson, T. / Johnson, R. / Bacheler, D. / Hely, C. (Jacobean Lute Music)
BIS: BIS-2055

BIS recording artist Jakob Lindberg continues to raise awareness and interest in lute music from throughout the ages. This program of Jacobean music for lute was personally selected by Mr. Lindberg who performs using a lute constructed in the late 16th century, in all likelihood the oldest functional lute in existence.
