Ildar Abdrazakov's name may not yet be familiar, but the distinguished Russian bass's first recording of arias from his homeland should firmly establish him as one of the great voices of our day. Collaborating with Maestro Constantine Orbelian and the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra and Choir (Lithuania), these arias by Glinka, Borodin, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev have never sounded better.

Ondine: ODE1211-2

A contemporary of Jean Sibelius, Leevi Madetoja's work merges elements of Finnish folk songs, French elegance and a certain mournful quality. This recording completes Ondine's cycle of all three Madetoja symphonies. Chief Conductor John Storgards conducts the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in a memorable performance.

Harmonia Mundi: HMC902161

Two memorial pieces are brilliantly paired in this new release from Trio Wanderer; Tchakovsky's monumental Piano Trio, subtitled 'In memory of a great artist,' his friend and mentor Nikolai Rubinstein, and Arensky's Piano Trio No. 1, dedicated to the memory of cellist Karl Davydov. Both pieces place considerable demands on the players, which Trio Wanderer dispatch with ease.
