Karayev, K.: 7 Beauties Ballet Suite / The Path of Thunder (Royal Philharmonic, Yablonsky) (Azerbaijani Composers, Vol. 4)
Naxos / Azerbaijani Composers: 8.573122

Kara Karayev was one of Dmitry Shostakovich's most distinguished pupils, combining his teacher's influence with his own distinctive use of native Azerbaijani folk melodies, and producing music in an eclectic range of genres. The Seven Beauties is the first full-length Azerbaijani ballet, and the suite heard here brims with an exotic array of appealing rhythms and melodies. The Path of Thunder uses elements of African and Afro-American music in its exploration of the theme of forbidden love in apartheid era South Africa.

Other Featured New Releases:

Balada, L.: Sinfonia en Negro / Double Concerto / Columbus (Abbühl, Lluna, Málaga Philharmonic, Colomer) Balada, L.: Sinfonia en Negro / Double Concerto / Columbus (Abbühl, Lluna, Málaga Philharmonic, Colomer)
Naxos / 21st Century Classics: 8.573047

Leonardo Balada's Sinfonía en Negro is a powerful response to Martin Luther King's murder as well as a description of the black people's journey in the Americas from slavery to freedom. Columbus: Images for Orchestra is a free adaptation of four contrasting scenes from his acclaimed opera Christopher Columbus, also available from Naxos.

Mercadante, S.: Flute Concertos Nos. 1, 2 and 4 (P. Gallois, Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä) Mercadante, S.: Flute Concertos Nos. 1, 2 and 4 (P. Gallois, Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä)
Naxos / 19th/20th Century Italian Classics: 8.572731

Saverio Mercadante was admired by contemporaries such as Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi for his groundbreaking operas. But during the years 1814 to 1820 he embarked on a series of works for the flute. They include seven concertos, happy exceptions to the rule in opera-obsessed Italy of the day.

Villa-Lobos, H.: Guitar Manuscripts (The) - Masterpieces and Lost Works, Vol. 1 (Bissoli) Villa-Lobos, H.: Guitar Manuscripts (The) - Masterpieces and Lost Works, Vol. 1 (Bissoli)
Naxos / Latin American Classics: 8.573115

This is the first of three volumes including rare and recently discovered works by Heitor Villa-Lobos. Guitarist Andrea Bissoli's research reveals new sources for lost manuscripts, reviving music thought to have been lost forever. This recording includes transcriptions of one of Villa-Lobos' best loved melodies, the Ária from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, as well as the Concerto he wrote for the legendary Segovia.
