This Week's New Features - Thursday, March 14, 2013

Villa-Lobos 'War' and 'Victory' Symphonies These symphonies were commissioned by the Brazilian government following the end of the country's involvement in World War I. Using very large orchestral forces and conveying the composer's feelings about the conflict with no sense of triumphalism, the two Symphonies display a confident use of evocative effects, such as the collage of fragments of the Brazilian national anthem and La Marseillaise in the 'Battle' movement of the Third Symphony. more info

Last Chance: Rachmaninov: All-Night Vigil (Latvian Radio Choir) and Philippe Jaroussky - The Voice
Rachmaninov: All-Night Vigil (Latvian Radio Choir) The Latvian Radio Choir conducted by Sigvards Klava gives us this breathtaking recording of Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil. This piece is considered one of the most difficult acapella pieces to perform, and is a sterling example of Russian Orthodox choral music. This recording was selected as Gramophone Magazine's Recording of the Month in February 2013. more info
Philippe Jaroussky - The Voice Virgin Classics celebrates the artistry of counter-tenor Philippe Jaroussky with a generous new collection. Featured also is his large catalog, the diversity of which demonstrates once again that there is much more to Jaroussky than 'the voice of an angel.' more info
