This Week's New Features - Thursday, June 12, 2014

Erno Dohnányi - Second Symphony Erno Dohnányi’s powerful Second Symphony was composed toward the end of the Second World War - its large canvas reflecting not so much his wartime experience as his own artistic credo as a Romantic composer.  The two songs for baritone and orchestra have been very rarely heard, and were revived by Alexander Jiménez with the Florida State University Symphony Orchestra in 2013. more info

Carl Reinecke - Cello Concerto Carl Reinecke's (1795-1883) works are rarely performed today and largely unknown to the listening public. Now Delos releases Michael Samis' debut recording with the hope of restoring this appealing and beautifully crafted work to today’s concert halls. more info

Last Chance: Messiaen - Turangalîla-Symphonie; and Per Nørgård's Symphonies 1 and 8

Messiaen: Turangalîla-Symphonie This new Ondine recording contains Olivier Messiaen's (1908-1992) magnum opus from the 1940s, the large-scale Turangalîla-Symphonie conducted by Hannu Lintu. Featured soloists include the renowned pianist Angela Hewitt as well as Valérie Hartmann-Claverie, who plays the rare electro-acoustic ondes martenot, which, alongside with the piano, has a substantial role in Messiaen's work. more info

Per Nĝrgċrd - Symphonies 1 and 8 With this world premiere recording, the Vienna Philharmonic offers new perspectives on the most visionary voice of Nordic music and one of the greatest symphonists of our time, Danish composer Per Nørgård. Conducted on this occasion by Finnish Sakari Oramo, these performances of Nørgård's Symphonies 1 and 8 – two milestones composed with almost six decades between them – are the legendary orchestra's first recording of new Nordic music. more info
