This Week's New Features - Thursday, August 21, 2014

Mendelssohn, Schumann, Bruckner and Brahms | Re-Imagined for Brass Septet What if four celebrated 19th century composers – Mendelssohn, Schumann, Bruckner and Brahms – had written original works for brass septet? This release explores that fascinating counterfactual twist, re-imagining choral and organ works by those composers. The arrangements call on the full dynamic and tonal range of the instruments – often extended with a multitude of mutes – to imitate the expressivity of the choir, the power of the organ, and the versatile sonorities of its different registrations and manuals. more info
Forever - The Love Poems of Pablo Neruda | Ute Lemper Ute Lemper's newest creation is love poems of the great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, set to music by Ms. Lemper and Marcelo Nisinman. Presented mainly in Spanish, but also containing adaptations in French and English, it is a celebration of these especially sensual poems by Neruda, written while in residence at his Casa de Isla Negra in the coastal Chilean community of Isla Negra after many years in exile. more info
Last Chance: Sheherazade; and Excelsior
Sheherazade - Toronto Symphony Orchestra Many composers have drawn inspiration from the collection of folklore known as the Arabian Nights but none has captured the imagination so vividly as Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov in Sheherazade, composed in 1888. Peter Oundjian conducts the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, recording for Chandos for the first time. more info
Excelsior - Fifth House Ensemble of Chicago The Fifth House Ensemble of Chicago chamber-music group aims for the stratosphere with Excelsior, its adventurous debut album on Cedille Records. The title refers to an experimental, extreme-altitude U.S. Air Force project of the Cold War era. Excelsior presents world-premiere recordings of works by celebrated composers Caleb Burhans, Alex Shapiro, Mason Bates and Jesse Limbacher. more info
