This Week's New Features - Thursday, August 14, 2014

People's Artist of Ukraine - Myroslav Skoryk This new release contains compositions by Myroslav Skoryk, holder of the title of People's Artist of Ukraine. With its swinging rhythms and folk music pungency, the Carpathian Concerto is one of Skoryk's most engaging and popular works. This and other live recordings were made at Myroslav Skoryk's 75th anniversary concerts in Odessa. more info
Sheherazade - Toronto Symphony Orchestra Many composers have drawn inspiration from the collection of folklore known as the Arabian Nights but none has captured the imagination so vividly as Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov in Sheherazade, composed in 1888. Peter Oundjian conducts the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, recording for Chandos for the first time. more info
Excelsior - Fifth House Ensemble of Chicago The Fifth House Ensemble of Chicago chamber-music group aims for the stratosphere with Excelsior, its adventurous debut album on Cedille Records. The title refers to an experimental, extreme-altitude U.S. Air Force project of the Cold War era. Excelsior presents world-premiere recordings of works by celebrated composers Caleb Burhans, Alex Shapiro, Mason Bates and Jesse Limbacher. more info
Last Chance: Ramón Vargas - Verdi Lieder
Ramon Vargas - Verdi Lieder Ramón Vargas is one of the most sought-after tenors of our time, performing with the world's greatest conductors and ensembles on the world's great stages. Here, he gives attention to Verdi Songs. Verdi considered the song as having 'the same significance as the sketch for the painter,' and can be seen as precursors to his stage works with a smaller, more improvised air. more info
