This Week's New Features - Thursday, August 7, 2014

Resurrection - Maxwell Davies 'Resurrection' is a comic opera by Peter Maxwell Davies that takes on a variety of targets including the state, the church and the media. Maxwell Davies began work on the opera while a student at Princeton, finishing it some two decades later. Dark and experimental, the score contains elements of hymns, marching band tunes, saccharine waltzes and commercial jingles. more info
Ramón Vargas - Verdi Lieder Ramón Vargas is one of the most sought-after tenors of our time, performing with the world's greatest conductors and ensembles on the world's great stages. Here, he gives attention to Verdi Songs. Verdi considered the song as having 'the same significance as the sketch for the painter,' and can be seen as precursors to his stage works with a smaller, more improvised air. more info
Last Chance: The Glenn Dicterow Collection; and Brazilian Guitar Quartet's Spanish Dances
New York Philharmonic - Glenn Dicterow Collection Violinist Glenn Dicterow is the longest-serving Concertmaster in the history of the New York Philharmonic, having joined in 1980 and since performed as its soloist every year. The recordings inside celebrate Mr. Dicterow and his integral relationship with the orchestra for nearly 35 years. His June 2014 performances of Beethoven's Triple Concertos mark his retirement. more info
Brazilian Guitar Quartet - Spanish Dances The Latin Grammy®-winning Brazilian Guitar Quartet's new album pays homage to the music of Spain which, in turn, gave rise to Latin American music. The album's eighteen bewitching selections, mostly dances, are primarily derived from piano works by six of the best known 20th century Spanish composers. The BGQ offers the richest sonic depth and range of any guitar quartet, thanks to the use of two eight-string guitars. more info
