Recording of the Year

Thankfully, the so-called Pesaro of the north, the Bad Wildbad Festival, continues to perform Rossini's operas with excellent conductors and singers with the resultant CDs being issued at bargain price on the Naxos label. The added virtue of this particular issue, from the twenty second Festival in 2010, is that its well sung and conducted performance fills in a gap in the lexicon of recordings of the works that Rossini composed or rewrote for Paris.

10/10 Artistic and Sound Quality

...a reading of exceptional liveliness, lasting under an hour. There are no dead spots, and the climaxes are really exciting as belted out by the Scottish National players. ...this stands out as perhaps the most vivid of all.

Excellent sonics in all formats make this a treat for Straussians and the curious, both.

5 Stars

This is an exceptionally brilliant performance in wonderfully clear and deep audiophile sound, and like Janowski's previous release on PentaTone of the Symphony No 3 in D minor, the reproduction offers rich tone colors and crisp details, thanks to clear separation of parts and the spacious multichannel sound. Perhaps here, more than in any other Bruckner symphony, the separation of parts is critical to appreciate the marvelous effect of the staggered fanfares in the first and third movements, and to understand the echoic effects Bruckner intended. They are here. Beyond those fine points, this is a richly rewarding listening experience for the elegance of Janowski's interpretation and the polished playing of the orchestra, which make this symphony shine with a radiance that few other musicians have achieved.

Highly recommended as one of the best releases of 2013.

Recording of the Month

I can't remember when I enjoyed a CD more than this. Patricia Kopatchinskaja—I'll refer to her as KP from here on if you donít mind—is a young Moldovan-born violinist, who is really a stupendous talent. The programme on this disc gives her ample opportunity to display that. From the start, it is clear that there is a lot more to her than glittering technical accomplishment. That quality is present in spadefuls, but is simply used to back up a truly outstanding imagination. She projects the character of these two works exceptionally vividly.

There is a sense of discovery, of spontaneous re-creation of these...masterpieces. Totally stylish yet wholly new; great playing and a truly outstanding issue.

Recording of the Year

The Danish National Symphony Orchestra give a terrifically disciplined yet adrenalised account of Eichberg's highly demanding, noisy and relentlessly exciting scores. Engineering at its best too. A compelling disc, all told, for every bold-leaning lover of big-sounding symphonies.
