The performances in both works are top-notch. Trumpeter Andrew Balio plays with incredible feeling and technical skills, and the orchestra in both works delivers excellent work under the masterful leadership of Vladimir Lande. The St Petersburg Chamber Choir and the four vocal soloists sing splendidly in the symphony as well. The Naxos sound reproduction is vivid and powerful. Strongly recommended—and I anxiously await the next issue in this marvelous series.

4 Stars

The main piece of this program is the Hiawatha Melodrama, a concert work for narrator and orchestra showing the relation between Dvořák's New World Symphony and Longfellow's poem The Song of Hiawatha, which Dvořák said had inspired him in the symphony. This work and some other compositions honor the relation between the Czech composer and American music and culture.

Editors' Choice

Love Fail, like many of Lang's other compositions, is somewhat unclassifiable, and in this lies its appeal. What sets it apart from the norm is the care with which it is shaped to take advantage of the multiple colors and sharp edges of Anonymous 4's voices, and at times the sounds heard achieve the grail of being simple and uncanny at the same time. Like Lang's other works, it will get your attention immediately, but it also has a real economy that is new and growing. Highly recommended.

Gramophone Choice

Great to see this superabundantly imaginative music being taken up by an institution as traditionally minded as the Vienna Philharmonic. Dacapo's recording is as beautiful as the Vienna Phil's playing...

Recording of the Month

The cast is of exceptional and even strength [and] Minasi's experience as a violinist is evident throughout as he directs the period instruments ensemble Il Pomo d'Oro. The orchestral performance is dynamic, the bowing expressive.
