Instrumental Choice

The sound of Jakob Lindberg's lute, made by Sixtus Rauwolf in the last decade of the 16th century, is unusually warm...In a meticulously voiced recital that moves between court, theatre and tavern, from music of great sophistication to music of extraordinary bluntness, Lindberg conjures an age that was as perilous as it was rich in musical invention.

This disc, led by the ravishing, petite-voiced, and Emma Kirkby-like tone of the new soprano Ina Siedlaczek (in great demand among consorts and Baroque recitals) is a fine tribute to four composers who wrote about Fortune... Each of these pieces is a smashing delight—no need to quibble about quality here or fear of a lesser type of music when compared with the Baroque big boys. This is good stuff, adventurous, vocally opulent, and stylistically exciting, and Siedlaczek's careful characterizations make for some enthralling and radiantly rewarding listening. All this captured of course in Audite's splendid surround sound...

10/10 Artistic and Sound Quality

The performances here under Werner Andreas Albert are stunning. He and the Hanover orchestra tear into the music with overwhelming power and bravura, and they are magnificently recorded. This disc is even better than the initial release in CPO's ongoing series, and if you collect music of this style and period, I can't recommend it highly enough.

Why are the composers of these vividly played pieces not better known? Conti's patriotic crusade is opening up pianistic vistas which are by turns beguiling and thrilling; a significant enlargement of the repertoire.
