Karol Szymanowski's Stabat Mater is an acknowledged choral music masterpiece, partly inspired by the time he spent consoling his sister after the death of her daughter. The use of Polish folk themes combined with liturgical text make the piece particularly memorable.

In the featured new release below, Edward Gardner and the BBC Symphony Orchestra and chorus give an impassioned reading, with an especially moving performance from soprano Lucy Crowe. Also included is Szymanowski's ballet Harnasie which draws upon Polish folk melodies as well.

Chandos continues to champion the work of Karol Szymanowski, and we feature this new release alongside previous releases from this important 20th century composer.
