Symphony No. 3 is the most expressively Russian of all Rachmaninoff Symphonies, particularly in the final dance movement. The album includes the rarely recorded Prince Rostislav and Capriccio bohemien, the first an early composition based on a Tolstoy ballad about the drowning of the Prince of Kiev, and the latter, a colorful fantasy on a gypsy theme. This volume in Chandos' celebrated Rachmaninoff series with the BBC Philharmonic was to be the final one, but now there are plans for a live disc from the 2011 Proms. For a limited time, take 20% off the previous entries in the Chandos Rachmaninoff series.
