Discover the world of Baroque opera with delightful masterpieces by Italian composers Cavalli and Vivaldi, Englishmen Purcell and Handel, French composers Lully and Rameau as well as some rarities by Francoeur, Rebel and the pioneering German composer Keiser. These works include some of the most spectacular and moving operatic music you’ll ever hear.

Classical Part I - Mozart

Mozart’s operas are regarded as the pinnacle of 18th century opera composition and belong in the main repertoire of most opera houses. Immense beauty, stunning inventiveness, sparkling wit and highly dramatic effects make these works outstanding masterpieces. Mozart composed masterful examples of different styles of opera, the German ‘Singspiel’, the Italian ‘opera seria’ (serious opera) and the Italian ‘opera buffa’ (comic opera). In each case his phenomenal insight into the psychology of each character has guaranteed the popularity of these great operas.

Romantic Part 1

Rossini was the most famous composer of his time, admired in the major opera centres of Italy as well as in Vienna, where audiences were captivated by his vivid style and his striking climaxes. His most popular work, The Barber of Seville, is often regarded as the quintessential Italian comic opera. Later in his career he also composed operas in the French grand tradition that were immensely successful in Paris.

Romantic Part 2 - Rossini

During the Romantic Era opera attracted a wider range of audiences than ever before, especially the educated and wealthy middle classes. This package contains examples of many different national styles, including Bizet’s initially scandalous but now popular Carmen, tragic operas such as Massenet’s Werther and Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, and works by Meyerbeer, Granados, Hallström, Marschner, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov, which showcase the variety of operatic music from France and Spain to Russia and the Nordic region.

Romantic Part 3 - Donizetti

After Rossini’s retirement and Bellini’s early death, Donizetti became the leading Italian opera composer and master of Italian ‘bel canto’. He composed more than 70 operas admired for their beautiful melodies and admirable control of drama, not to mention the extraordinary virtuosity he demanded of his singers. His highly successful L’Elisir d’amore was premiered in 1832 in Milan and remains among the best loved operas to this day, while the tragic tales of Lucrezia Borgia, Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I’s impossible love for Robert Devereux still thrill opera lovers.

20th Century & Contemporary Part 1

Enjoy the variety of 20th century operas, including landmark works such as Debussy’s timeless Pelléas et Mélisande, Britten’s haunting The Turn of the Screw, Berg‘s compelling Wozzeck, Schoenberg’s stunning Moses und Aron, Wolf-Ferrari’s romantic La Vedova Scaltra, and other treasures by de Falla, Pfitzner, Respighi, Schreker, Ravel and Rachmaninov.
