Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg began a two-year appointment as composer-in-residence at the New York Philharmonic in the 2009–10 season. One of Alan Gilbert’s major new initiatives as Music Director,  Mr. Lindberg's appointment includes composing music for the Philharmonic and serving in a curatorial role for the institution. He will also be an integral part of CONTACT,  the New York Philharmonic's new-music series, including curating and conducting programs.  Magnus Lindberg was born in Helsinki in 1958. Following piano studies, he entered the Sibelius Academy, where his composition teachers included Einojuhani Rautavaara and Paavo Heininen. In 1981 Mr. Lindberg moved to Paris for further study.

While exploring ideas for an Opera, Mr. Lindberg decided to compose to Latin texts 'because of their remoteness.'  The result is Graffiti, based on wall writings from the city of Pompeii.  According to Lindberg, 'To sum the piece up it’s about huge contrasts, with clashes of mood and expression, and a dynamic dialogue between text and music.'  Please enjoy this exciting new work, and for a limited time, take 20% off this and other releases by Magnus Lindberg from Ondine and ClassicsOnline.
