Marcel Tyberg was born into a musical family in Vienna, and was an organist, conductor and composer.  Though a devout Roman Catholic, Nazi records showed that he had a Jewish great grandfather, and he was therefore arrested, sent to a concentration camp and killed.

JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra build on the attention they brought to Tyberg with their previous recording of his 3rd Symphony, which Tyberg gave to a friend for protection shortly before being captured.

His 2nd Symphony was originally premiered by family friend Ralph Kubelik with the Czech Philharmonic in the early 1930s.  This seldom heard music reflects Tyberg's reverence for 19th Century styles.

Regarding the previous recording in this series, the Washington Post wrote, "The Buffalo Philharmonic... has never sounded better... Tyberg's music is well-crafted and earnest, filled with seriousness of purpose and harmonic mastery."
