Dame Evelyn Glennie is a highly celebrated percussionist with more than 170 commissioned compositions and a huge collection of over 1800 instruments.  She is the recipient of 15 honorary doctorate degrees from British Universities and was awarded an OBE in 1993, promoted to DBE in 2007. Since the age of 12 she has been profoundly deaf.  However, she hears with her entire body, even performing barefoot to increase her sensitivity.  She can tune timpani with complete accuracy by sensing the vibrations in her fingertips.  Her virtuosity as a percussionist bears witness to the fact that her disability has not prevented her performing with other musicians, nor it seems, limited her in any way.  Click this link to hear her inspiring Ted talk 'How to Truly Listen':

John Corigliano had reservations about writing a percussion concerto, but the challenge fascinated him.  The Conjurer is the result, and Dame Evelyn Glennie conjures the music from wood, metal and skin.  Vocalise brings the listener from a purely acoustic experience to one that becomes suffused with electronics and amplification.
