Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco composed these Piano Concertos a decade apart, and they contrast dramatically. Concerto No. 1 is an exuberant example of his wit and romantic spirit, with rich melodies and adroit orchestration. Concerto No. 2 is a more somber virtuosic work suggestive of the Fascist Racial laws and subsequent persecution that led Castelnuovo-Tedesco into US exile in 1939. The Four Dances from 'Love's Labour's Lost' are part of the composer's recurring fascination for the art of Shakespeare; lively, richly characterized and hugely enjoyable. This is their first performance and recording.
