French composer Olivier Messiaen was fortunate to have literary parents and a musical education at the Paris Conservatoire starting at age 11. And we are fortunate that Sylvain Cambreling is so sensitive to the mysticism and drama in Messiaen's compositions. David Hurwitz calls Cambreling a 'vivid and idiomatic interpreter' of Messiaen, and Victor Carr Jr. writes that Cambreling is 'thoroughly successful in realizing the exotic and mystical states evoked by Messiaen's L'Ascension, reveling as he does in its captivating sonorities and astringent edges. ' The judges at Midem agreed, awarding the Orchestral Works box set the Award for best Contemporary Classical release of the year. For a limited time, take 20% off this selection of Haenssler Classic releases from O. Messiaen and Sylvain Cambreling.
