Light and lyrical yet stirring and substantial, Alexander Borodin's First Symphony took 5 years to complete as the composer was a celebrated chemist by day.  Yet music was no mere avocation, and his inclusion in 'the Five' or 'Mighty Handful' was richly deserved.  Borodin's festive and boldly nationalistic Second Symphony is more identifiably Russian and his Third Symphony was left unfinished, but later resurrected and orchestrated by Glazunov with great sensitivity and imagination.

Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony have already gotten great notices for their recent Naxos recording of Sheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov, another of the 'Mighty Handful'.  The current season is Gerard Schwarz' 26th and final one as Music Director of the Seattle Symphony. He begins next season with the new title of Conductor Emeritus.

For a limited time, take 20% off the companion titles, including more by Borodin and more from Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony.
