Unrequited love fuels the opium-poisoned dreams of a young composer following the murder of his beloved. This is the subject matter of Symphonie fantastique a semi-autobiographical account (there was no actual murder) of Hector Berlioz one-way attraction for the Irish actress Harriet Smithson. He later married the object of his affections, but composed Le corsair after the final breakup of their marriage. Both pieces are included here in a brilliant new recording from Leonard Slatkin and the Orchestre National de Lyon.
