Alaria is a word coined from two Latin roots: “ala,” wing, and “aria,” song. The name is reflected in the ensemble’s preference for the lyrical in music of all periods. Since 1986 the ensemble has presented a series of yearly concerts in beautiful Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. In 1996 they began an ongoing exchange under the auspices of the Italian Cultural Institute. Alaria has been ensemble in residence at Mannes College of Music in New York City for the past twenty-four years, and has also been ensemble in residence at the New York Composer’s Circle, premiering numerous new works. Alaria has taught and performed at such festivals as Ameropa (Czech Republic), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Emilia Romagna Festival (Italy), and Manchester (Vermont).
