Peter Schreier was born in Gauernitz, where his father was a cantor and organist. At the age of eight he joined the Kreuzchor in Dresden. After finishing his secondary school studies he took voice lessons privately in Leipzig, which were followed by courses in singing, conducting and choral direction in Dresden. He has been a soloist in the ensemble of the Dresen Opera since 1961. Following a guest contract with the Berlin State Opera he had his earliest successes abroad in Vienna, Saltzburg, New York and Milan. Since then he has given roughly 150 stage and concert appearances per year, focusing on the opera houses in Berlin, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and Hamburg. Since 1970 Peter Schreier has appeared in public with increasing regularity as a conductor. As a singer of lieder he has acquired a repertoire of about 400 pieces by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf and Mendelssohn, among others. Today Schreier is considered one of the foremost lyric tenors in the world.
