Oswald Kabasta (1896 - 1946)

Born in Lower Austria, Oswald Kabasta was a close contemporary of several other distinguished Austrian conductors, notably Karl Böhm (b. 1894), Hans Rosbaud (b. 1895, who was to be his successor at the head of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra), and Jascha Horenstein (b.1898 in Kiev, but educated in Vienna). His musical training was exceptionally strong: at the Vienna Academy of Music he studied conducting with an early champion of Bruckner, Ferdinand Löwe, and composition with Joseph Marx, continuing subsequently with Franz Schmidt. It was with Schmidt’s help, and on the recommendation of the distinguished Wagnerian Karl Muck, that he secured his first major post, at Graz in 1926.
