Milan Horvat initially read law at the University of Zagreb, and went on to study conducting with Fritz Zaun at the Zagreb Music Academy from 1939 to 1946, as well as piano with Svetislav Stancic and composition with Zlatko Grgosevic. Having launched his professional career in 1945 as a pianist and choral conductor, he was subsequently appointed conductor of the Zagreb Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1946. He remained with the orchestra until 1953, while also teaching conducting at the Zagreb Music Academy, and between 1953 and 1958 was chief conductor of the Radio Telefis Éireann Symphony Orchestra in Dublin. Horvat returned to Zagreb as chief conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra from 1958 to 1969, also serving as chief conductor of the Zagreb Opera between 1958 and 1965. His period as chief conductor of the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Vienna, from 1969 to 1975, was what effectively brought him to international attention through the orchestra’s numerous broadcasts, international tours and recordings, although he had actually previously made several recordings for the Westminster label in Vienna. From 1970 onwards he taught conducting at the Salzburg Summer Music Academy, and held the position of professor of conducting at the Graz High School for Music from 1975 to 1989.
Horvat has appeared as a guest conductor in many major cities in Europe, the USA and Japan. He was chief conductor of the Graz Symphony Orchestra between 1997 and 2000, is honorary chief conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, and permanent guest conductor of the Slovene Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as still being active as a guest conductor across central Europe. Horvat’s recorded performances, most of which date from his period with the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra, are direct and unaffected. He has a particularly effective sense of timing, and is able to bring off major works, such as the symphonies of Bruckner and Franz Schmidt, to great effect. He has also done much to encourage the performance of music by Croatian composers.
