Luigi Piovano

Luigi Piovano, principal cellist of the Symphony Orchestra of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome, started studying music at the age of five with his father Antonio Piovano, pianist and composer. At the age of seventeen he took his diploma under the guidance of Radu Aldulescu with first-class honours. He won a scholarship to the International Menuhin Music Academy at Gstaad, and played in concerts all around the world with the Camerata Lysy under Menuhin’s direction. He then took a diploma in cello and chamber music at the European Conservatoire of Music in Paris. Prizewinner of several international competitions (Trapani, Illzach), he is a member of the Quartetto Michelangelo and of the baroque group Concerto Italiano.

He has recorded for EMI, Nuova Era and Opus 111, and in 1999 took part in the Menuhin Festival and in the Salzburg Festival as a part of the Pollini Project, with which he appeared at the Carnegie Hall in New York in 2001, in Tokyo in 2002 and at the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome in 2003. Since his début there in 2000, he has been a regular guest at the Newport Music Festival in the United States and of the Sun Festival in Cortona. Since 2002 he has been the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Campania Chamber Orchestra, and since 2007 guest principal cellist of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. He plays a Matteo Goffriller cello dated 1718.
