Lionel Friend has become known in the opera house for his Wagner interpretations as well as Mozart, Schubert, Berlioz, Chausson, Berg, Dallapiccola, Britten, Tippett and Tavener. His concert repertoire includes Beethoven and Sibelius in addition to the avant-garde and he has conducted over a hundred world premières. His recordings, many with the Nash Ensemble, include Debussy, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Poulenc and Turnage. Friend made his début with Welsh National Opera and has held appointments in Germany and London. He has recently conducted in Germany, Norway, Australia and the United States and he is now Conductor-in-Residence at the Birmingham Conservatoire.
