Jansug Kakhidze (1936 - 2002)

Jansug Kakhidze studied composition and conducting at the Georgian State Conservatory in Tbilisi. He started his professional career as a choral conductor, and was the artistic director and conductor of the Georgian State Chorus from 1955 to 1962. He also directed the vocal ensemble Chvidkatsa, with whom he won a prize at the World Youth Festival held in Moscow in 1957. After gaining his diploma from the Georgian Conservatory in 1958 he went on to advanced conducting studies with Odysseus Dimitriadi and later with Igor Markevich in Paris. Kakhidze was appointed chief conductor of the Paliaschvili Opera and Ballet Theatre, Tbilisi, in 1965, remaining in this position until 1968. Between 1973 and 1975 he was chief conductor of the Łódź Opera in Poland, and from 1973 also of the Georgian State Symphony Orchestra. During this period he conducted many orchestras throughout the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, including the Leningrad Philharmonic and the USSR State Symphony Orchestras. Kakhidze made his conducting debut in the West in 1977 with the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he continued to appear regularly during succeeding seasons. In the same year he was awarded the prestigious Rustaveli Prize of Georgia; other awards included the title of People’s Artist of the USSR. However, Kakhidze’s international career only truly gained momentum in 1988 when he made several very successful debuts: at the Berlin Festival with the Georgian State Symphony Orchestra, in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra, and
