Update me on new releases by Varga

Tibor Varga (1921 - 2003)

Tibor Varga attached significance to the fact that he was born in the same western region of Hungary as Leopold Auer, Carl Flesch and Joseph Joachim. The son of a violinist, he appeared in public for the first time aged six, played Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto at ten and made a European tour at fourteen.

He studied under Gabriel and Leo Weiner at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest at the recommendation of Jenő Hubay, who intended him to enter his class, but died before Varga could do so; Varga performed Hubay’s Violin Concerto No. 3 at a concert marking the composer’s death in 1937.

In 1947 Varga settled in London, making his Wigmore Hall debut and recordings with Gerald Moore and the Philharmonia Orchestra around this time. When he retired in 2002 he was appointed Professor of Violin at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria, working there until his death in 2003.
