Marc Lewon

Marc Lewon specialises in medieval instruments of the lute family and medieval Germanic languages and literature. After gaining a Master’s degree in musicology and medieval German from Heidelberg University, he moved to Basel to further his practical music studies in the Medieval Department of the Schola Cantorum. There he studied lute, vielle, and singing, graduating with honours. The combination of musicological scholarship and countless years of concert activities provide him with the ideal qualifications for an interdisciplinary approach to research and practice for the music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. He plays regularly with a number of ensembles including Unicorn, Dulce Melos, Perlaro and Andreas Scholl & Shield of Harmony and especially with his own ensemble Leones. Besides being a busy performer, he gives courses in medieval music and publishes articles and editions on the subject. He is the director of master-classes at Burg Fürsteneck, where he teaches with Uri Smilansy, he is artistic advisor to the festival for early music in Worms “wunderhœren”, and is currently working on his PhD thesis with Reinhard Strohm at Oxford University.
