Ian Parrott is unique amongst the composers represented here in not being Welsh by birth. However, his long association with the country and its music has earned him the right to be accepted as a true citizen of the principality. He was horn in London, and educated at Harrow School, the Royal College of Music and New College, Oxford. After war service, he took up a teaching post at Birmingham University, before being appointed Professor of Music at Aberystwyth in 1950, a position he held until his retirement in 1983.
As a composer, he has written operas, symphonies, and string quartets as well as shorter works, many with Welsh connections. As an author, he has written studies of several British composers, including Elgar, Peter Warlock and Cyril Scott.
