Belgian-born cantor and composer Hugo Chaim Adler was cantor of the Haupt-Synagoge in Mannheim, Germany, from 1922 until his emigration to the United States in 1939. In the United States, Adler was cantor and music director of Temple Emanuel in Worcester, Massachusetts, and in 1942 he was awarded first prize by the Central Conference of American Rabbis for his liturgical settings. He wrote many large-scale cantatas on biblical and other Judaic subjects, as well as two complete services.
