A pupil of Edward MacDowell, among others, Henry F. Gilbert worked as a violinist and undertook a variety of jobs, not necessarily related to music. He was among those who strove to support a specifically American form of music, instead of a culture based on Europe. His studies of Amerindian, black American and Celtic music are reflected in his own work.
