A native of Somerset West in the Cape Province of South Africa, Gideon Fagan was trained in his own country and at the Royal College of Music in London. He spent 27 years in England before returning home to take up the position of assistant conductor of the Johannesburg City Orchestra, later becoming music director of the South African Broadcasting Corporation and lecturing at the University of Cape Town. Well know as a conductor, he also enjoyed a reputation as a composer.
Orchestral Music
Fagan made use, in his compositions, of material of African origin, heard in his 1941 tone poem Ilala and other works.
