George Kontogiorgos

Born in Lamia, Greece, George Kontogiorgos studied music theory with Alexander Aenian, at the Municipality Conservatory of Lamia. He continued and completed his studies with the same teacher in Athens, with a particular interest in composition and orchestration. During the 1960s and 1970s, he wrote and recorded more than seventy ballads and popular songs for well-known popular singers. Some of these proved very successful and were given awards as golden records. He wrote music for the theatre and the 3rd National radio channel, in addition to soundtracks for the cinema and for television series. From 1980 onwards he devoted himself systematically to the composition of classical music. He has written works for solo instruments and vocal works, string quartet, orchestral ensembles, chamber orchestra, symphony orchestra, and concertos for piano and for guitar and orchestra. He is a winner of several prizes and awards, including the first prize of the Classical Marimba League International Composition Competition, USA 2007, the Gardens Music 3rd International Composer’s Competition, Krakow, Poland 2006 and the In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores contest, USA 2012.
