A grandson of the composer Aaron Avshalomoff, David Avshalomov was born in New York City and studied music at Harvard, followed by a doctorate in conducting at the University of Washington, study with Otto-Werner Mueller at Peabody, with Herbert Blomstedt at Aspen, and with Bernstein and Ozawa at Tanglewood. He combines his career as a conductor with that of a composer. His moving Elegy of 1989 was written in memory of Leonard Bernstein.
