The English composer Antony Holborne was described by John Dowland as a former Gentleman Usher to Queen Elizabeth, but otherwise little is known of his life, in spite of his reputation as a musician. He was a prolific composer for lute, cittern and bandora, and published The Cittharn Schoole in 1597, which included 58 of his pieces, followed in 1599 by a collection of consort music, a series of dances, in five parts.
