Gunnar de Frumerie showed an early aptitude as a pianist, and was to become a pupil of the legendary Cortot. His career as a concert artist and teacher was to form the bulk of his life, but he also enjoyed a reputation as a composer of impeccable technical skills. His songs were particularly prized, and he became a major Swedish composer of piano music. He did explore every form of composition, from grand opera to piano miniatures, his catalogue of orchestral works including several fine Piano Concertos. Though he became a professor of piano teaching, he was never to find a place in the Swedish musical establishment, and his national and international reputation probably never received the attention his works deserved.
