Gunther Schuller (b1925)

Gunther Schuller has enjoyed a long and varied musical career as a composer, conductor, publisher, educator, broadcaster and orchestral musician. Between 1942 and 1949 he played the horn with several organisations including the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the Cincinnati Symphony; he established the Margun and GunMar publishing companies and has taught at some of America’s most prestigious establishments including Tanglewood and Yale. His musical language is imaginative and expressive, often drawing on the influence of Schoenberg and Webern; he has also written many jazz works and in 1957 he coined the expression ‘third stream music’ referring to a style that lies halfway between jazz and classical music.
