The black American jazz pianist Art Tatum was nearly blind from birth, but established a reputation for his innovative improvisations, heard in many recordings and in the clubs in which he played, primarily in New York and Los Angeles. His unusual technical and musical abilities and achievements strongly influenced a later generation of jazz performers.
