Carter Pann (b. 1972)

Carter Pann began studying the piano at an early age with his grandmother before having lessons with Emilio Del Rosario at the North Shore School of Music in Winnetka, Illinois. At this time he also studied composition with Howard Sandroff from the University of Chicago at Hyde Park. He received a Bachelor's degree from the Eastman School of Music, studying composition with Samuel Adler, Joseph Schwantner, Warren Benson, and David Liptak and piano with Barry Snyder. He received a Masters degree from the University of Michigan under William Bolcom, William Albright and Bright Sheng.

As a composer he as won a number of accolades which include the K. Serocki Competition in Poland for his Piano Concerto, the Zoltan Kodaly and Francois d'Albert Concours Internationales de Composition, a concerto commissioned for clarinettist Richard Stoltzman (Rags to Richard, given its first performance in Carnegie Hall), a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and four ASCAP composer awards. His works have been performed in the United States and Europe. As a complement to composing concert music he often scores TV/Radio commercials. Recently he finished a 9 1/2 minute scherzo for orchestra entitled Slalom which depicts the thrill and beauty of downhill skiing at Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
