Penguin Guide To Classical Music - DONIZETTI: Double Concerto / Flute Concertino / Clarinet Concertino
DONIZETTI: Double Concerto / Flute Concertino / Clarinet Concertino

DONIZETTI: Double Concerto / Flute Concertino / Clarinet Concertino

8.557492
Published Review (Penguin Guide - Key Recording & Rosette Award): We already know the Concertino for Cor Anglais, which is played here with a delectable timbre and a nice feeling for light and shade. The Clarinet Concertino brings a touch of melancholy to its opening cantilena, yet the finale chortles. The Flute Concertino also opens with an eloquent aria, but the closing rondo is irrepressibly light-hearted, with an infectiously carefree, Rossinian wit. The Oboe Concertino has a vigorous hunting finale, played here with bouncing zest. The Double Concertino, in three movements, is the most ambitious work. In short, all these concertos are most winning, as elegant as they are inventive, and all the expert soloists (several of whom seem to be interrelated) smilingly convey the music’s Italian sunshine. The Concertos are framed by two contrasting Sinfonias. Both are played very persuasively, and throughout the collection László Kovács and his Budapest chamber orchestra provide supportive and stylish accompaniments. The recording could hardly be bettered, and the result is a collection which will give great and repeated pleasure. Now at Naxos price it is a great bargain.

Published Review (Penguin Guide): It is extraordinary that such a mature artist with a ravishing vocal line and musicianship to match, should be launched by a super-bargain label.

Penguin Guide To Classical Music - GLAZUNOV: 5 Novelettes / String Quintet in A major
GLAZUNOV: 5 Novelettes / String Quintet in A major

GLAZUNOV: 5 Novelettes / String Quintet in A major

8.570256
Published Review (Penguin Guide): Glazunov’s warmly attractive lyricism as well as his technical mastery come out winningly in both these works, not least the Novelettes charming genre pieces, each echoing a different national dance, Spanish, Hungarian, Oriental, and so on. The String Quintet of 1891, like Schubert’s great C major Quintet, adds a second cello to the string quartet. It is beautifully fashioned and mellifluous, with the first movement introduced by the viola unaccompanied, a sonata movement full of attractive themes. The second-movement Scherzo with its pizzicato writing leads on to the Andante sostenuto, the longest and weightiest of the four. The work is brilliantly rounded off with a Russian dance. The Fine Arts Quartet plus Nathanial Rosen on the second cello give brilliant performances, warmly understanding as well as polished, and very well recorded in New York.

MENDELSSOHN: String Quintets (Complete)

8.570488
Published Review (Penguin Guide): The Fine Arts Quartet…strike(s) a splendid balance between vitality and elegance, the Intermezzo of the A Major Quintet is engagingly played, the Scherzo is crisp and brilliant, the Adagio of the B Flat Quintet is most warmly and stylishly played, and both Finales sparkle. The recording is excellent.
