About This Recording: Leopold Mozart was already making a significant contribution to music as a performer and composer when his son, Wolfgang Amadeus, was born on January 27, 1756. His precocious talents were quickly noted, and he received a thorough musical training from his father. At the age of six he made his debut as a keyboard player in Munich, and a few months later in Vienna. Paris and London fell under his spell, and by the time he was ten he had a catalogue of works to his credit, many already published... Read more

User's Review: Wonderful, crisp orchestration and a masterful recording  I had listened to five and thirteen before this recording, so I was well prepared. I had never heard Norrkoping before, but had listened to Segerstam's Rautavaara symphonies before, and for me he is a superb director. I had no idea of the treat that I was in for. Most of Pettersson's symphonies are on one huge canvass... Read more

User's Review: Surprising, cinematic, fully enjoyable discovery  The disc opens with Istar and its lush, atmospheric opening with prominent horns and woodwinds. This is followed by a melodic interplay between solo strings (violin) and solo woodwinds (oboe/flute). Then enters a happy jaunt which is quickly interrupted by a march followed by swirling romantic themes (reminiscent of Bernard Hermann at his romantic best) coming to a grand conclusion... Read more

MARTINU, B.: Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 4 / Les fresques de Piero della Francesca / Overture (Kolinsky, Basel Symphony, Ashkenazy)

ODE1158-2
Published Review (By David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com): The two piano concertos receive splendid performances, and they are marvelous works—certainly two of the finest 20th-century compositions for piano and orchestra. No. 2 combines memorably lyrical thematic material with a real opposition of personalities between piano (chromatic, full of wit) and orchestra (sweetly diatonic). No. 4 is a remarkable piece, almost athematic but full of arresting sounds and textures, written in two formally fluid movements... Read more

User's Review: Rare delights from a rare Composer  I am a fan of the Breton Admiral, Jean Cras; but not of all 'melodies francaises' by any means. Cras was a friend of Duparc; and these songs remind one of his delicacy; and can stand comparison with his and their even more illustrious contemporaries, the chansons of Faure and Debussy. They gain too from the stylish performances of Lionel Peintre - full of nuances - Catherine Estourelles and the magnificent accompaniments of Alain Jacquon... Read more

User's Review: Brilliant Mahler There are so many great performances of the Mahler 4th on record, that to be viable, a new disc should surely have something new to say or have a different way to say it? Herreweghe's orchestra seems lighter and more brilliant sounding than most of what I have heard over the years. You should have one of Bruno Walter's or Otto Klemperer's for authenticity perhaps... User's Review: An Alpine Symphony with a glorious operatic sound Unquestionably one of Richard Strauss' most compelling scores, all it took was the opening measures of this recording to catapult me to the base of the most magnificent mountain range I have ever imagined. What is more, the sound of the Paris Opera Orchestra gave me chills worthy of the photograph on the cover of the CD case... Read more
