User's Review: deVictoria Requiem evokes depth of feeling across the centuries This CD consists of a sixteenth century requiem and three motets—from the title, it might be surmised that there would be a limited audience for such a recording. Then the music begins, a capella, and the listener is whisked away to another date and time... Read more

User's Review: A jewel among Brahms recordings This Requiem is a strange work of its kind - not just because, as mentioned in the title, it is sung in German, but in particular because Brahms chooses not to use the words of the catholic Requiem mass. Instead representative passages from the German protestant Bible are used, allowing the composer to avoid "the sorrow and terror of many Requiems, favouring instead the pursuit of serenity and peace" - as it says on the back cover of the CD; and very aptly put, too... User's Review: First class pompous music I bought this album because I sometimes like some pompous music. The titles are interpreted, as usual for Canadian Brass, technically first class so that I forget sometimes that there are only five musicians (plus drums and percussion that complete the sound experience without playing themselves too much into the foreground)... User's Review: An interesting album of rare music The two composers featured here are both rarely heard, both Danish, and more or less contemporary, but they write subtly different music. The works by Gerson are beautifully crafted and excellently orchestrated, yet they are richer in surface beauty than in deep emotion. (Though I do catch myself singing the tunes after the works have finished!)... Read more |

Published Review (By V. Vasan, Allmusic.com): This exciting album showcasing the works of Francisco Mignone is performed with great feeling and expressivity by the unique and inspiring Cuarteto LatinoAmericano...they bring their love of interesting and rather unknown repertoire to this CD. All the works are so attractive that it’s practically impossible to choose a favorite without unfairly slighting the others.

User's Review: Composer worth exploring Madetoja's music is quiet and understated. There is an unmistakeable influence from Sibelius, but also from Finnish folk-music, the Russians and the French impressionists. All the works on this disc are very grateful to listen to, but the Second Symphony is a masterpiece... Read more |

User's Review: Stunning! As David Cates has remarked elsewhere, this album is simply stunning! The playing is passionate, with just the right amount of rubato, and reproduces Couperin's highly detailed ornaments perfectly. The recording is rich and sonorous - you are hearing the full depth of the gorgeous instrument (apparently a Hemsch) from the ideal position... Read more |
