User's Review: An Unlikely Treasure  So, what is one of the world's leading Flamenco guitarists doing with one of the world's great folk-singer/guitarists? In this case, somehow crossing their respective musical borders to make some of the most ravishing and purely beautiful music ever recorded. For me, this recording became important years ago, when I journeyed to Spain to study... Read more

About This Recording: Joseph Haydn was born in the village of Rohrau in 1732, the son of a wheelwright. Trained at the choir-school of St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, he spent some years earning a living as best he could from teaching and playing the violin or keyboard, and was able to learn from the old musician Porpora, whose assistant he became... User's Review: Rarely heard, life-enhancing music This is a delight. The main work here, The Hallelujah of Creation, shows a composer who not only knows his Mozart and Haydn (Kunzen conducted 'The Creation' not long before writing this), but who can write well-crafted, noble and attractive music with its own personality... User's Review: A work of youth - and a work of contemplation As the music of Carl Nielsen gradually spreads to the rest of the civilized world, and more and more foreign conductors take up the challenge of interpreting his symphonies, it must in the nature of things come to his compatriots - of whom I am one - to sample and weigh the quality of such endeavors, weaned on these national edifices as one is... User's Review (By Franklin Bretschneider): Pisendel: Sparkling concertos Johann Georg Pisendel is a much underestimated (late) baroque composer. I haven't heard from him before until a concert announcement in my home town. I got curious, and found this album at ClassicsOnline. Although some people might classify these concerts as "standard baroque", akin to Bach, Telemann or Vivaldi, it has become one of my favourite albums within a few weeks... Read more

User's Review: Beautiful 18th-century music  The composer Gaetano Brunetti is scandalously under-represented in the music catalogues. This probably has to do something with the lack of modern editions of his music (he spent a long time writing for Charles III of Spain, and few works were ever published). Apart from the three symphonies here, I've only ever heard of (and heard) one other Brunetti symphony, a work in F major conducted by Newell Jenkins... Read more

User's Review: The most unsettling opera in the book... Leipzig style This is the "Wozzeck" that hardly anybody knows. Initially shunned, this the first twelve tone-opera that certainly has found its place in the international repertoire in spite of its gloom, madness, murder and coarse language - or perhaps exactly because...
