User's Review (By Pedro A. Tesone): A magnificent version The album is really brillant because of the intense musicianship of the orchestra and the conductor; in particular the last movement is full of life and expression, besides it is played with what I should call "italianship..." I did not know this orchestra nor its conductor and this recording has made me listen to musicians of the utmost musicianship... Read more |

User's Review (By Ted Wilks): Jacopo da Bologna Madrigals The fourteenth century, i.e., 1300-1400, known as the Italian "Trecento" or Italian "ars nova," is the period associated with the beginning of the Renaissance, which included the development of Italian music, especially Italian polyphony. Apart from his major role in the beginning of composed Italian polyphony, relatively little is known about the life of Magister Jacopo da Bologna, who flourished around 1340-1360... Read more |

User's Review: Clear and convincing Absolutely perfect sound quality makes this a special recording. You can feel the distance of the instruments, and you can hear exactly where each instrument stands. The performers are seasoned artists who seem as one; technically accomplished, they offer a beautiful interpretation that is as proficient as it is fresh... Read more |

User's Review: Delight in discovery There are apparently five arrangements of Shostakovich quartets as 'Chamber Symphonies', at least one of which was approved by the composer himself. On this disc are versions of String Quartets 3 & 4. The arrangements go beyond simply amplifying the strings and add wind, and in one of the works, brass and percussion too... Read more |

User's Review: A Wonderful, Eccentric Collection Fanshawe's collection of traditional Polynesian chants is a delight. Many of these musicians are not professional- they simply play music in their free time. Fanshawe's skill in finding these people, recording them, and arranging them is unique. The size of the album makes it feel like Fanshawe truly spanned Polynesia and took a sweeping record of its collective spirit. Approximately half of the tracks are in a chanting form that achieves glorious harmonies... Read more

Celebrated as one of the most successful and gifted composers of his day, Saint-Saëns wrote music for woodwind instruments throughout his long career. This recording presents music from his early days as the bright young thing on the Parisian music scene to the last year of his life. Canada’s renowned National Arts Centre Wind Quintet joins Stéphane Lemelin, a laureate of the Robert Casadesus International Competition, to interpret these assured and beautiful works which combine virtuosity, gentle wit and thoroughly French charm. |

PERICH, T.: 1-Bit Symphony (Perich)CA-21054 | |
Published Review (By Kraig Lamper, American Record Guide): Perich’s...1-Bit Symphony is easily one of the simplest ideas with perhaps the greatest packaging I have come across. The release is an absolute delight. The entire composition is coded as much as it is arranged, and the listener need only attach headphones to the case and hit the On switch to begin play. Perich creates a lively, rigorous work with melodic expression, recognizable form, and engaging sounds. |
