User's Review (by Norman Geddes): Dvorak Piano & Violin Concertos Of Dvorak's three concertos the one for piano is seen very much as the runt of the litter. It is seldom played and seldom recorded, but this particular recording shows it in the best possible light. Doubtful newcomers should listen in particular to the gorgeous slow movement. The whole work is delightfully played and well-recorded... Read more |

User's Review: A pretty good version There are squillion versions of Water Music about the place -- all with their various influences from the conductor. I chose this album as the conductor's tempo is quite well-paced. The country dances bounce along at a speed you would have expected and they are quite jolly (as are the rest of the pieces). Other versions have a tendency to be a little ponderous. For someone wanting music the way it should be, this is the version for you. |

User's Review: Find of the century! It may sound a little over the top, but this CD certainly is a great find. The music is inspiring, melodic and a delight to listen to. Schmidt-Kowalski was born in 1949, which makes the music even more amazing. It continues the romantic tradition into the 21st Century. Sure it may be eclectic, sounding a little like Brahms, Bruckner, along with the melodic sweetness of Max Bruch, but it has its own stamp of originality... Read more |

Published Review (by Allen Gimbel, American Record Guide): This is the second disc of choral music by Peteris Vasks. The Tomtit’s Message...is a 9-minute piece in three parts drifting metaphorically through sunrise, daytime, and nightfall. The music moves through Ligeti-esque choral color, impressive virtuosity, and rich harmony, well performed by this fine choir... Read more |

User's Review: Czerny - worth a listen Czerny has a reputation as a composer of piano exercises, but this album shows why Beethoven had a high regard for him. Like the music of Ries, this shows the clear influence of Beethoven. The Czerny Symphony No. 2 in D has some parts that are very similar to Beethoven's second symphony, but there are still some interesting and original places in the Czerny work... Read more

User's Review: Good mix of favourites I bought this in order to familiarise myself with the Missa de Angelis and some of the chants for Gaudete Sunday. I was not disappointed. Some of the pronunciation does not accord with the Vatican standard, but that is part of the fun of listening to different renderings of the chant from around the world. The tunes match the Liber Usualis and that is what I wanted... Read more |

User's Review: Rich diversity I discovered Stephen Chatman on radio (where I make a lot of discoveries of composers heretofore unknown to me). I find it interesting that for a long time Americans have been insular listeners and concert-goers. We have focused on Ives, Copland and their colleagues and followers while being oblivious to a host of English-speaking composers in the UK, Canada, and Australia... Read more |
