User's Review: Robert Ilosfalvy -- A Voice for the Ages! I consider myself a connoisseur of operatic tenors, starting with Caruso, extending through the rest of the 20th century, and including the most recent newcomers of the modern era. At one time I could identify up to 30 different tenors in three notes or less — and possibly more... Read more |

Published Review (By Jonathan Woolf, MusicWeb International): With the exception of Alan Ridout’s 1971 Ferdinand the Bull, Rachel Barton Pine’s disc consists of solo violin fireworks predicated on Latino lines. Even when the composer is Ysaÿe, in one of his famous 1923 solo sonatas, the recipient of the dedication is the violinist Manuel Quiroga, and the work infused with the dedicatee’s Iberian passion. For good measure we are helpfully treated to two of Quiroga’s own pieces, and these are real rarities on disc. |

Published Review (By Mike Ashman, Gramophone): An auspicious launch for a projected cycle of Grieg’s music for orchestra The launch of a third new survey of Grieg’s orchestral music in the last decade, following Bjarte Engeset’s for Naxos and Ole Kristian Ruud’s for BIS, starts here (the first volume of a promised five) with the most obvious popular items... Published Review (By James Inverne, Gramophone): An eminent Belgian label that sometimes slips under the radar somewhat, Fuga Libera clearly have some canny artist-spotters in their ranks, judging from the quality of musicians they manage to find. The latest discovery is the Dali Trio, a prize-winning young European group who cast a lasting spell on this repertoire. Harriet Smith’s review even compares them favourably to the Beaux Arts Trio. More from the Dalis please!

Award-winning pianist Klara Min has been recognized for her “excellent technique, exuberance and vitality” (New York Concert review). Here she brings the unique synthesis of traditional sources and contemporary compositional techniques of five leading Korean composers. Their works range from descriptive serenity in Younghi Pagh-Paan’s Pa-mun, childhood simplicity in Chung Gil Kim’s Go Poong (‘Memory of Childhood’) and rhythmic and dynamic extremes in Sukhi Kang’s Piano Sketches. Pioneering figurehead Isang Yun is represented by his early expressionist Fünf Stücke and the much later improvisatory Interludium. |

DONIZETTI, G.: Lucia di Lammermoor [Opera] (Gergiev)MAR0512 | |
User's Review (By James Inverne, Gramophone): Now here’s an intriguing pairing. In the pit, Valery Gergiev, heavyweight conductor with a penchant for the orchestral fist. On the set, Natalie Dessay, light-voiced yet mercurial stage animal. One would think that a Gergiev Lucia would need a weightier soprano, a Netrebko perhaps. But Dessay’s complete commitment to the role is matched by Gergiev’s theatricality. |
