Published Review (by Michael Cookson, MusicWeb International): The String Quartet No. 5 in B flat major, Op. 92 comes from one of the most extreme periods of Stalinist terror in Russia. It was premièred just after Stalin’s death in late 1953 but had been written a year earlier, in 1952. At the start of the first movement the viola’s first four notes are a combination of the composer’s personal D-S-C-H motif. A complex and challenging work, the three movement quartet is performed without a break. In the central movement Andante/Andantino, attacca—the emotional core—the Pacifica convey a sense of total desolation like a bleak landscape, ghostly and unforgiving.

Published Review (by David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com): You might think of Riisager as the Danish Malcolm Arnold, without the bitterness and melodrama. The music is rhythmically vivacious, full of good tunes, and wonderfully scored, even without special coloristic effects. The performances in this first volume of a projected series of Riisager’s symphonic works are first-rate, and so is the engineering. Bo Holten and his players clearly relish the music’s color and energy, and I can only welcome this release with great enthusiasm and high hopes for the series as a whole.

GERSHWIN, G.: Piano Concerto / Second Rhapsody / I Got Rhythm Variations (Weiss, Buffalo Philharmonic, Falletta)

About This Recording: George Gershwin’s Concerto in F was a response to demands for a ‘proper concerto’ after the success of Rhapsody in Blue, avoiding programmatic content while providing a feast of tunes both uplifting and nostalgic. Originally intended as music for a film, his up-beat Rhapsody No 2 describes the bustling Manhattan cityscape while under construction. Sourced from his hit musical Girl Crazy, I Got Rhythm Variations was Gershwin’s last full score. Pianist Orion Weiss is one of the most sought-after soloists and collaborators of his generation of young American musicians.

Published Review (by Stephen Plaistow, Gramophone): Jean-Efflam Bavouzet says he is on a crusade to convey ‘the boundless treasures of this sublime music’. I have not heard finer Haydn-playing from a pianist since Alfred Brendel, and among the four sonatas here, the one in C minor, the first great sonata for the piano, has blown me away.

User's Review: Brilliant Antique Sound  I just love its cover when I first saw it and I tried for the sample playback and it does sound exactly like its cover, very antique sounding. I should describe it the art nouveau period recording in an advance technology! I love track 2 - Cortege, track 3 - Menuet from Debussy, and track 13 - Laideronnette, imperatrice des pagodes by Ravel, and many more. This particular Piano Duo is my favorite as it sounds like a mini orchestra in a much light-hearted manner. So sweet and soothing to the ear... Read more

Published Review (by Malcolm Riley, Gramophone): Quinney delivers finger- and foot-perfect performances. …this makes for a very full disc but one which is highly satisfying. How fitting, too, that it is dedicated to the much-lamented David Sanger, an inspiring teacher to so many organists.

User's Review: French Baroque Masterworks Rachel Barton Pine and her two colleagues, John Mark Rozendaal (viola da gamba) and David Schrader (harpsichord), known collectively as Trio Settecento follow up their superb Italian and German collections with one devoted to composers of the French Baroque. The program is imaginatively assembled and stylishly executed. The sonics are just about perfect. Excellent liner notes to boot.
