STRAVINSKY, I.: Sacre du printemps (Le) (The Rite of Spring) / Petrushka (1911 version) (Bergen Philharmonic, Litton)

BIS-SACD-1474
Published Review (by Roger Hecht, American Record Guide): The sound is very good…It’s a little lighter and airier for Petrouchka, while the engineers seemed to have expanding the acoustic for the Rite, especially on the lower end. Whatever my reservations, I like these performances. Litton has worked wonders with the Bergen Philharmonic, which plays with dazzling technique and excellent clear tone.

User's Review: Rebel hymns from the 1700s  Hymns have been with us for ages, though the liner notes only mention back to the 18th Century. There has always been a mix of secular and sacred elements in popular devotional song. Still this collection helps bring us back to an age where this mixture was causing waves. The period instruments help shake off the preconceived notions we tend to attach to hymns - no organs here... Read more

Published Review (by Terry Robbins, The WholeNote): The Mendelssohn is a beautiful performance, never over-played, with an affecting slow movement and a finale that displays detailed, subtle and sensitive playing without ever losing a sense of line...Tetzlaff...does a lovely job with this work, as he does with the Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra… It was originally felt to be a brilliant and cheerful piece…

HILLBORG, A.: 11 Gates / Dreaming River / King Tide / Exquisite Corpse (Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Salonen, Oramo, Gilbert)

BIS-SACD-1406
Published Review (by Guy Rickards, Gramophone): The present collection showcases Hillborg’s typically multifaceted and wickedly good-natured humour...Dreaming River (1998) is different…its starting point the shawm-like sound of the Chinese oboe, the suona (Hillborg deploys two). The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is on splendid form throughout, led by conductors who have championed these works at home and abroad. BIS's SACD sound is typically spectacular, making this release very strongly recommended.

User's Review: Another excellent Daphnis from Haitink  Bernard Haitink recorded this score more than a few times, with orchestras in America and Europe. Besides this live London recording from 1979 (from the BBC archives), I was very impressed with another more recent live recording, with the Chicago Symphony on CSO Resound in 2007... Read more

User's Review: Colours of the organ  It was the label that made me buy it. The Abbaye de Solesmes is the leading authority on Gregorian Chant where the organ is so often in the background and overlooked. Here the organ takes centre stage. And it shines. The melodies tumble over each other in cascades of sound, winding thoughtful paths through different landscapes of the heart. There is nothing grandiose, but just beautiful. Bach is usually my favourite, but the Pieces for the Organ for the Magnificat in eight different tones by Guilain (tracks 3-9) stands out... Read more

SCHNITTKE, A.: String Quartets Nos. 1-4 (Molinari Quartet)

ACD22634
Published Review (by Philip Clark, Gramophone): The Beethovenian scherzo keeps tripping headlong into crisis moments where high-velocity lines are on the brink of unravelling. The physical violence of the Molinaris’ attack sorts the men from the boys. And they also deliver the most persuasive account I’ve heard of Schnittke’s problematic First Quartet (1966), which is pretty much a catalogue of then modish Penderecki/Ligeti clusters, glissandos and twangs. The Molinaris’ physicality elevates the work’s slightly vanilla material.
